About Your Fishing Trip

Fishing Brainerd Minnesota with Mark's Lil Guide Service for walleye and bass guide trips in the Brainerd Lakes area of North Central Minnesota with Professional Brainerd Minnesota Fishing Guide Mark WallinThe Brainerd Minnesota Lakes area is blessed with an abundance of lakes. There are 465 lakes and a couple of rivers, including the Mississippi, that are considered part of Brainerd Minnesota's Lakes Area.

Some of the more popular lakes in the area that I fish are Gull Lake, Pelican Lake, North Long Lake, Round Lake, Hubert Lake and the Whitefish Chain, but this is just a short list of lakes that are available to fish. If there is a specific lake in the area you would like to fish, just let me know and I will be more than happy to take you there.

Additional trips can be planned for lakes such as Mille Lacs and Leech Lake. Mille Lacs is a phenomenal fishery, from walleye and smallmouth bass to muskies and northern pike. The walleye population on Leech Lake is really rebounding and the fall perch bite can be outstanding.

We will be fishing in an Alumacraft Tournament Pro 195 with a 100 HP Mercury tiller outboard.  This is one of the best fishing platforms that I have fished out of, with room to fish four comfortably.  I have to admit that I get wet when the wind picks up and other boats make it across the lake faster, but I prefer the advantages of a tiller over a console.  The tiller opens up the floor space, creating extra room for people and equipment, and the boat is really stable and able to handle the big waters as well as get in to the shallow spots that a lot of other people overlook.

Walleye and sturgeon fishing guide trips on the Rainy River.

Rainy River Fishing Trips - If you have never experienced fishing the Rainy River in early spring, I encourage you to do so. You can not only find high numbers, but also have the opportunity to catch the biggest walleye of your life!  The season is open on the Rainy until mid-April and depending on the ice, trips can start in late March and go until the river turns muddy.  Sometimes this window of opportunity is small if there is a lot of run-off, but the rewards are great.  Just the experience of being on the river with hundreds of other boats, all enjoying being on soft water again and catching fish, is unique.  Add in the opportunity to catch a lot of fish and some big ones, and you have a trip not to miss out on.  I can also help assist in making sure that you have all the correct paperwork needed.

Walleyes aren’t the only fish biting, as sturgeon make their appearance in the river. This ancient fish will give you a fight that will leave your arms tired and your body aching for more.  At this time of the year, sturgeon fishing is catch and release only, but there are open season later where you can keep 1 fish per season per person.

Things To bring on your trip:

I can provide all your fishing needs, but be sure to bring the following:

  • Minnesota fishing license (additional information can be found at Minnesota's DNR site)
  • Food and beverages
  • Weather appropriate clothing (Click here for weather report)
  • Raingear
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera

Check out the table below to see best times for fishing.

I practice selective catch and release, but if you would like a mess of fish to fry, just let me know and I can clean and bag your fish, ready for the fryer or for the freezer.  Check out one of my favorite tools out on the water and while cleaning fish: the Master Edge utility tool  It has a great hook and knife sharpener and has a variety of other household uses.  This can be found at one of my great sponsors, Precision Tool Technologies.

Another great sponsor is Pequot Tool & Mfg., for all of your machine shop needs.

I am also a proud supporter of Camp Confidence and Fishing Has No Boundries.  This is almost a selfish type of support, as I usually get more out of it than the campers.  If you get the opportunity to support the camp or to volunteer for one of the events, I encourage you to do so.

If darkhouse spearing is your game, please give MN Spearing Guides a visit.  Jason, Kathy, and Bob are some of the most knowledgeable people in the business and it really shows in the fish that they are able to decoy in and in the decoys that they carve themselves to bring in the fish.
